Hi! My name’s Bill and I’m a mechanical engineering student at the University of Waterloo. I’m interested in materials science, specifically the applications of polymers in mechanical systems and materials in energy production. I’m on the look out for opportunities to apply my learning, so let me know if you’ve got ideas you want to chat about. You can check out some of my experiences & projects here, or what I’ve been up to on my website www.billpan.info!

Materials Science Research & Development Engineer Intern
Bioform Technologies
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
January 2025 - Current
Invented a novel cross-linking mechanism for polyacrylate hydrogels, discovering a new polymer structure with improved gel properties including 16% increase in strength, diffusion, and elasticity.
• Optimized hydrogel properties using the Design of Experiments framework, identifying key parameters in material synthesis and testing dynamic variables.
• Conducted 50+ tensile and puncture tests using hydraulics (INSTRON and MTS Press), examining material stress-strain performance, elastic modulus, and rheology.
• Analyzed experimental data in MATLAB, LabView, and Excel, applying materials science and fluid dynamics models to generate results that streamlined testing procedures and evidenced reports.
• Supported technical writing and editing of reports for investors, patents, and research literature, improving clarity and communication of complex research findings.
Airframe & Flight Dynamics Team
University of Waterloo Rocketry
Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
September 2024 - Current
• Fabricated fiberglass-epoxy composites with female molds on steel mandrels, followed by vacuum-sealing techniques and precision sanding for rocket airframes.
• Designed a custom lathe attachment jig and a rocket body support system (spit roaster) to streamline sanding and bodywork on AutoCAD and SOLIDWORKS.
• Conducted in-depth research on rocket coning and stability, performing literature reviews to evaluate spin can necessity and determine rockets’ L/D ratio.
• Crafted 12 x 49-inch wooden panels to be assembled into large body molds using a circular saw and band saw.
Quantum Gas Lab Intern
UBC Madison Labs
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
January 2023 - April 2023
• Contributed to research on quantum properties of slow particles in superconductors, using laser optics to cool rubidium and lithium atoms to near absolute zero.
• Redesigned and built 12 optic shutters from hard drive cases for laser apparatus, improving experimental efficiency.
• Enhanced Python code for experiment automation and data collection, integrating 2 new libraries for optimized data storage.
• Synthesized research literature for weekly presentations and maintained detailed meeting minutes for lab review.
Pharmacy Assistant
Shoppers Drug Mart
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
October 2022 - August 2024
• Compounded specialized topical medicines using pharmaceutical lab equipment and processed over 1600 prescriptions, including narcotics and topicals.
• Ensured safety, hygiene, and confidentiality in a fast-paced pharmacy environment, collaborating with rotating staff to ensure smooth operations.
• Managed patient profiles and provided customer support via the HealthWatch database, handling insurance communications, emergency supplies, and prescriber note transfers.

Piezoelectric Walk-for-Energy Device
July 2024 - September 2024
• Engineered a shoe sole prototype that generates 1.9 V AC per step using piezoelectric ceramic disks.
• Developed the first prototype with 5 soldered disks connected to a multimeter sensor probe; iterating second prototype addressing ceramic cracking through research, creating electrical schematics and 3D models with AutoCAD.
• Drafted and revised grant applications to Social Shifters 2024 and Grebel Peace Incubator, seeking $4000-$10,000 in funding; prepared professional proposal documents and an elevator pitch video.
Design & Optimization of Microbial Fuel Cells
January 2023 - Current
https://billpan.info/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/mfc-optimization-paper.pdf• Designed and built 18 microbial fuel cells (MFCs) from recycled materials, using carbon fiber electrodes and copper wiring to generate energy.
• Programmed an Arduino compiler to collect over 850 voltage readings during 3-week experiments, analyzing data with PASCO Capstone and Excel.
• Authored a 4,000-word APA 7 research paper, investigating MFC mechanisms and optimization with glucose as the fuel.
• Compared experimental results with literature and assessed the viability of MFCs in sustainable energy applications.
